02/27/2008 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The United States Congress has asked the Justice Department on Wednesday to investigate whether seven-time Cy Young award winner Roger Clemens committed perjury during testimony about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.
The chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), and ranking Republican, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA),on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Wednesday, claiming Clemens "committed perjury and made knowingly false statements" to the committee.
"We believe that his testimony in a sworn deposition on Feb. 5, 2008, and at a hearing on Feb. 13, 2008, that he never used anabolic steroids or human growth hormone, warrants further investigation," Waxman and Davis wrote. "That testimony is directly contradicted by the sworn testimony of Brian McNamee, who testified that he personally injected Mr. Clemens with anabolic steroids and human growth hormone.
"Mr. Clemens's testimony is also contradicted by the sworn deposition testimony and affidavit submitted to the committee by Andrew Pettitte, a former teammate of Mr. Clemens, whose testimony and affidavit reported that Mr. Clemens had admitted to him in 1999 or 2000 that he had taken human growth hormone."
McNamee, the star pitcher's former trainer, testified along with Clemens on Feb. 13 before the same committee. McNamee and Clemens gave contradictory testimony that day into the Mitchell Report, which detailed the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball.
An affidavit from Andy Pettitte, who was excused from the proceedings, said he and Clemens discussed Clemens' alleged use of HGH in either 1999 or 2000.
During his deposition before the committee, Clemens denied he had ever used steroids, human growth hormone, or any other type of illegal performance- enhancing drugs. However, McNamee had previously said he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormone at least 16 times between 1998 and 2001.
Clemens has consistently denied taking any performance-enhancing drugs, saying the only thing McNamee ever injected into him was a pain-killer called lidocaine and the vitamin B-12. He said he never used steroids and disagrees with the use of it, saying that it is just a "quick fix."
Waxman, in an opening statement on Feb. 13 said, "We have found conflicts and inconsistencies in Mr. Clemens' account. During his deposition, he made statements that we know are untrue."
In his opening statement, Davis said there were very different stories in the depositions both Clemens and McNamee gave the week prior to the public hearing.

With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.
Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season. Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.
This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy. A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.
